On hills and mountains

Make sure you're properly prepared for your outing. The hills and mountains can be dangerous places.

In spring and summer make sure your dog is under close control to give ground nesting birds better breeding success. Between July and October, estates are stalking and shooting so consult Heading for the Scottish Hills external site   before you go to minimise disturbance to these activities.

If you're wild camping, make sure you've considered the advice from the Mountaineering Council of Scotland about toileting external site   and camping in the great outdoors external site .

Remember to take midge-repellent with you in the summer months. To find out more about these swarming biters, have a quick read of our factsheet.  PDF document
