Heading for the Scottish Hills
'Heading for the Scottish Hills' helps you find out where deer stalking is taking place on participating estates over the busy stag stalking season (1st July to 20th October) and to plan routes which minimise the chance of disturbing stalking. General stalking information has been updated for 2013 but please check again nearer the start of the season as some information may change and some Estates wil provide detailed updates.
More information on access rights and deer stalking is given in hill-walking and stalking
.
How to use Heading for the Scottish Hills
The map shows the areas that are currently part of the service, but please be aware that deer stalking takes place all over Scotland and not just on these properties. To access stalking information between July and 20th October either click on the appropriate property on the map, or find out if the hill you plan to visit is in the service by entering the name of the hill or area in the search box - any included areas are then highlighted in the area the map zooms to. Once you have clicked on a participating property the name of that stalking area is displayed in the table below the map and stalking information can be accessed by clicking the link in the 'stalking information' column. (You can also get the stalking information by clicking on the red dot within the property, then clicking 'view stalking details' within the pop up box.) You will now be able to see the latest available information which varies from specific details for the next day or two with any suggested alternative routes displayed, to more general information about stalking on that property, with contact details to find out more information if required.
The 1:50,000 legend
describes the map features, however there's currently a glitch with the map and the most detailed OS backdrops are not available. This has resulted in properties being tagged as 'undefined', however, the property name is visible when a property red dot is clicked and in the table below the map when a property has been selected. This should be resolved in August.
Disclaimer
Deer are mobile and stalking plans can change at short notice. The Heading for the Scottish Hills pilot depends on information provided directly by participating estates. The information is provided on this website in good faith but we cannot guarantee its accuracy.
